Overall Döner Score: 9/10
Positive:
This döner almost brings tears to my eyes— it’s so insanely tasty
They add sweet and regular potatoes, both of which are 🔥additions
You get a hint of lemon, the acidity and flavor of which, contrasts really nicely with the fatty, succulent meat
The portions are quite large and can easily be shared
High quality and very fresh. Very good ratio of veggies to meat without one overpowering the other.
The sauce: With many Döner of lower quality, the sauce is used as a crutch to support poorly seasoned meat with little flavor. At Rüyam, the relationship is far more symbiotic, though each could probably stand alone and in other formats.
Friendly staff willing to put up with my shitty, broken German (they also seem to have a lot of English-speaking clientele and speak English well, so if you really speak no German at all and do speak some English, I don’t think it should be a problem)
Negative:
There is usually a line, but it moves fairly quickly
The turnaround is pretty quick, but not immediate like at a standard döner place. You have to take a seat and wait until your number is called.
They only have chicken and vegetarian options, so if you prefer a döner with Kalbfleisch or another meat, this isn’t the place for you
Place is very small and can be difficult to move around in
Overall impression:
I love Rüyam dearly. I have only had so many döner since moving to Berlin so I am hesitant to give this place a perfect 10, but in my book, Rüyam comes pretty damn close to being the perfect sandwich. The flavor combinations here are very balanced and seem to be well thought out in a way that other döner just aren’t. The quality is very high, and the ingredients seem to be quite fresh. This is a place I always take out-of-town guests because it is consistently excellent. If there was a location closer to me, my body would have shut down from döner poisoning within my first month of living here.
